FROM THE ARCHIVES: Construction is nearing completion of the latest cluster of waterfront town homes in the Shipyards development in Collingwood. Let’s look back at a special day in the town when officials from FRAM, the Town of Collingwood, and residents, all gathered together to celebrate the official opening of the Promenade at Side Launch, marking the first time in over 100 years public access to the waterfront at the foot of Collingwood’s main street was possible.

FROM THE ARCHIVES: It was 34 years ago that the Collingwood Shipyards shut down operations. Ships had been built at the foot of Collingwood’s main street for over a century. FROM THE ARCHIVES: There was a special launch ceremony in Collingwood Harbour to remember Black Bay, a Great Lakes Freighter built in the Collingwood Shipyards. The video features the late Jim Trott of the former Trott’s Furniture.

Collingwood’s murals paint a picture of what life was like years ago throughout South Georgian Bay. Murals can be found throughout the town’s historic downtown district. This year, work is underway to create new artwork on the side of the Shipyards Medical Centre. Not too long ago, the Sidelaunch mural was rescued from the side of the now demolished Mountainview Hotel, repurposed, and installed in a new location just steps from where massive ships built in the Collingwood Shipyards hit the water for the first time.
